Hyaluronic acid (HA): don’t leave the pharmacy or your face without it. Using a skincare product without HA is like sailing without a breeze, a pizza without a cheese, or a kiss without a squeeze. (I was going to add a cold without a sneeze but that’s a tad gross.) In other words, make absolutely sure that your skincare product has HA.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally-occurring integral part of maintaining youthful skin. It is responsible for maintaining fluids and moisture in your joints, eyes and, of course, your skin.
Hyaluronic acid is not only a moisturizer but it is also a humectant meaning that it brings water with it into the skin, locking moisture in deep and giving your skin an overall hydrated and youthful complexion.
-
Anti-aging: strengthens the skin protective barrier. Furthermore it smooths out the face and delays skin thinning.
-
Nourishing: antioxidant.
-
Hydrating: a powerful moisturizer and humectant.
-
Reduces redness.
The Best Version
Hyaluronic acids are not all created the same. The most effective form of hyaluronic acid is the “cross polymer sodium hyaluronate”, hence the reason we have chosen this for Amazon Silk. It truly is a remarkable ingredient, able to absorb water at 5x the amount of regular HA. It is tantamount to getting filler injections, such as Juvederm and Restylane (also hyaluronate), but in a cream that is formulated to be able to penetrate the skin (it is smaller than regular HA). As such it is able to smooth out fine lines, moisturize much more effectively and deeply and for a longer period of time. It’s as though you absorbed millions of tiny sponges (the cross polymer mesh) deep within the skin, which holds and then delivers the essential moisture to the skin.
When the cross polymer enters the dermis (the important bottom layer of the three layers of skin), the skins’ enzymes break down the bond between the molecular structure, which makes it possible for the polymer to move freely. The skin is continuously filled with hyaluronic acid over a long period of time. This water filled crosslinked HA gel then forms a smooth film in the skin and continuously delivers the bound water, so it gives long-term moisturizing benefits. This “mesh” also strengthens the skin's protective barrier.
-
penetrates the skin deeper
-
holds 5x more water
-
more stable, less likely to be oxidized hence longer lasting
A study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology : JDD., 2016 Apr;15(4):434-41., revealed that cross-linked HA reduced the "TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss, the water lost from the skin) by 27.8%.
